History of Alton
THE HISTORY OF ALTON CEDARWOOD GREENHOUSES
Alton Greenhouses was originally founded in 1921 by Mr W A Pound who made a greenhouse for his own use. After making this original greenhouse for himself, word of mouth spread throughout his family and friends and then into the public domain, very similar to social media toady, to such an extent that Mr Pound decided to found Alton greenhouses and in doing so became the first manufacturer to produce greenhouses for the domestic market.
The name of Alton originates from the Wyre Forest, this is where the first Alton greenhouses were made. The part of the forest that was used was called "The Alton Hundreds" and so what is probably the most famous name in greenhouse manufacturing was born.
The business was run as a family concern and Alton greenhouses grew from strength to strength and eventually a large factory was opened in Worcestershire. The business grew from strength to strength until the factory was covering 20 acres of land.
Mr Pound run the company until the 1970s in by which time a larger range of greenhouses with high quality workmanship was firmly established as a brand leader and the first choice for all keen gardeners. Mr Pound showed his greenhouses at the Chelsea Flower Show and found that his sales staff were continually being approached existing Alton owners who went out of their way to tell them how delighted they were with their Alton greenhouse.
The company has changed hands since then but the core values of producing a quality greenhouse fit for the Alton brand name remain.
As time progressed some things have changed for the better as technology has developed this has enabled Alton greenhouses to offer a wider range than ever before.
Alton greenhouses always only use the finest western red cedar sustainably sourced from FSC / PEFC / CSA certified suppliers who manage the great cedar wood forests in Canada.
Alton greenhouses now include more features and benefits with the greenhouse gardener in mind.
