Installing Your Alton Greenhouse

Most sections of your Alton greenhouse will arrive pre-glazed, making it quick and easy to install. Naturally, Alton supply full instructions.

Alton recommends you prepare a primary footing of concrete or paving slabs for your greenhouse to stand on. Alton's concrete base kerbs come as standard, providing attractive and robust foundations. This provides a stable level base and prevents the wood from coming in contact with the damp soil. You will find full details on their base kerb dimension sheet, which will be sent to you after you have purchase you greenhouse giving you ample time to prepare your base prior to delivery, which is normally 2/3 weeks.

Ventilation - A must For Healthy Plants

Fresh air is as important to plants as regular watering. However, there's more to ventilation than simply opening the door, a current of air must circulate throughout the greenhouse, removing warm air and replacing it with fresh air, especially at ground level, where plants are vulnerable to mould.

Alton's Unique Ventilation System

The unique ventilation system on all Alton greenhouses, combined with the natural thermal properties of Cedar, is proven to provide healthier plants and higher yields.

Ground level Ventaccess openings are fitted as standard on alternate bays and when these are combined with the roof vents and the optional mid-level louvre vents, fresh air is able to circulate throughout every corner of your greenhouse.

Location - Location - Location

As most gardeners can tell you, you should buy the biggest greenhouse that your space and budget can accommodate. Alton advises you go for maximum width rather than length, as the Amateur and Traditional greenhouses can be extended with five modules at a later date.

You can optimise storage and growing space by selecting staging and high-level shelving, if you buy a package deal this is normally included for one side, you can buy extra staging and shelving as an option.

If space in your garden is limited, or you're looking for an extra sheltered growing space close to your house, why not consider an Octagonal greenhouse. The smaller footprint is ideal for smaller gardens and its added height provides an attractive focal point.

Alternatively, a Lean To greenhouse is a popular option as it is a high quality half greenhouse, which can be built against an exterior wall. Ideally, the wall should be south facing, to maximise light and warmth.
Your wall effectively acts as a radiator, warming up during the day and slowly releasing heat into your greenhouse at night.

Siting Your Alton Greenhouse

For convenience, aim to site your greenhouse as close to your house is possible. Try to ensure it doesn't fall in the shadow of your house.

Site a freestanding greenhouse with its ridge running from East to Wes, as this gives better light penetration in the winter when the sun is low in the sky.

Avoid positioning your greenhouse near trees, in the shadow of walls or other structures, or in highly exposed positions, not hat the Alton greenhouse will not stand up to exposed conditions, it is not a good idea because the wind will chill the greenhouse in the spring when you are using heat to bring on your seedlings, costing you more in heating.

Consider access to water and power supplies when choosing your site.

Ideally site the Lean-To greenhouse against a south facing wall, to maximise light and warmth.
